Assistant General Counsel

This is an Assistant General Counsel position and the Attorney would be responsible for natural gas business transactions for KMI’s interstate natural gas pipelines including related FERC and other agency regulatory filings such as certificate and permit applications and other major project authorizations. This attorney will also provide similar services for the natural gas midstream assets including intrastate transmission, gathering, processing, and treating companies.

The core responsibilities will include the negotiation, drafting, and implementation of joint venture agreements, purchase and sales agreements, precedent agreements including long-term transportation and storage agreements. The position will require sound drafting capabilities for various venues including federal and state trial and appellate courts working together with KMI’s in-house litigation counsel as well as managing outside counsel.

Position Requirements

Seeking candidate who has been admitted to the Texas Bar with 5 to 8+ years of legal experience with either a reputable law firm or a gas pipeline company or energy company (or a combination) engaged in legal practice regarding business transactions including day-to-day natural gas or natural gas liquids processing, transportation and storage activities, business development, as well as acquisitions and divestitures. FERC regulatory experience with filing certificate applications, tariffs and/or major construction projects would be an advantage. KMI is seeking a candidate with excellent writing, research and communications skills and experience working directly with Vice Presidents and the President of one or more of the Kinder Morgan natural gas entities in either our interstate natural gas pipeline or our intrastate and midstream businesses. This position is for a team player who is flexible and willing to pitch in and do what it takes to efficiently and effectively operate Kinder Morgan’s extensive natural gas platform day to day while also working to capture business opportunities.

Candidates should also have some experience with pipeline operations, integrity and safety regulation, as well as environmental regulation of the natural gas and natural gas liquids businesses. There is also a need for the candidate to have some experience analyzing whether various activities, business structures and other relationships trigger regulation under various federal, state or local statutes and regulations.
