Summary:

Cigna's U.S. Business Law team seeks an experienced attorney to lead the Group Insurance legal team. Reporting to the VP, Corporate Secretary and Chief Counsel for U.S. Business Law, the individual will be a senior lawyer capable of providing strategic vision and advice to the Group Insurance senior leadership team (of which this individual will be a key part), managing and developing a diverse group of attorneys who support this business, and operating in a highly matrixed environment to ensure that the business is fully supported by all parts of the Legal Department in helping to achieve the segment’s goals and objectives while mitigating risks. This position requires a strong understanding of the Group Insurance business and a demonstrated ability to: assess ambiguity and risk, interpret evolving bodies of law using strong judgment, lead and develop a team for maximum performance and counsel senior executives proactively and effectively. Cigna's Group Insurance business includes Group Life, Accident and Disability Insurance products. The Managing Counsel must understand the law applicable to this segment, but also the current business goals and challenges facing the segment to effectively deliver appropriate solution-oriented advice and business counsel in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

Managing a diverse group of attorneys in a mature, transparent and positive manner, while reinforcing accountability, and developing talent.

Understanding and advising on the current law applicable to the business, as well as on the potential future state of the law based on where laws and regulations may be evolving.

Assisting the segment with strategy creation, new product and service development, and risk mitigation.

Ensuring that the entire legal team provides creative, proactive, customer-focused, solution-oriented advice to advance and protect business goals, risks and objectives.

Identifying, developing and driving projects to conclusion that will support successful achievement of business goals.

Proactively and continuously identifying opportunities and solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Legal team, its interaction with the business and its delivery of legal advice.

Engaging and managing outside counsel.

Interacting and negotiating when necessary, with state and federal regulators.

Working with State and Federal Government Affairs teams to address the legal landscape through legislative and regulatory processes.

Overseeing cross-border business expansion of the Group business

Qualifications

JD/Bar membership required

10+ years relevant in-house or law firm legal experience in the group insurance industry

Subject matter expertise in the areas of: ERISA, group life, accident and disability insurance products, third party benefits administration and contracting, and state and federal regulatory issues, (experience working cross-border is also a plus)

A highly collaborative individual with ability to influence others and build strong professional relationships

Demonstrated customer-focused, strategic approach to problem solving and the ability to efficiently manage a substantial number of complex issues

Strong analytical, negotiation and communication skills

Demonstrated experience interacting effectively with federal and state regulators

Ability to maneuver through business barriers to facilitate solutions

Exceptional record of leading a team, developing individuals and exhibiting influential leadership

Strong work ethic and excellent judgment

A demonstrated commitment to integrity and ethical decision making
