Role Summary:

Counsel U.S. Business Law seeks an experienced attorney to join a team of lawyers responsible for providing advice and counsel to Cigna's Group Insurance and Leave Administration business. Primary responsibilities may include supporting the segment’s Cigna Leave Solutions, depending upon skills and experience. The Counsel is responsible for deeply understanding the business and the law applicable to it, counseling the business to help mitigate risks while helping the business accelerate and effectuate its strategy, training, writing articles demonstrating thought leadership in the industry, and presenting to clients, brokers and human resource professionals.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities for this role within the Cigna Group Insurance Legal team include advising on employer leave administration, including the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA), state leave laws, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Counsel is on a team, and may have responsibility for, advising on insured and self-funded group benefits, including the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), and other laws applicable to voluntary benefits, disability, life, accident, critical illness, and other benefits. The Counsel will interact with employers, regulators, and internal clients. The Counsel will manage outside counsel relationships related to their responsibilities, adeptly evaluate and communicate risks, and appropriately ensure compliance with legal requirements.

The Counsel must:

Drive tasks to conclusion and execute effectively and independently alongside knowledgeable, experienced internal clients at all levels, including close executive level support.

Provide creative, proactive, customer-focused, solution-oriented advice to advance and protect business goals, risks and objectives.

Independently prioritize and manage matters in the manner necessary to meet changing client demands.

Independently engage and manage outside counsel and interactions with state and federal regulators.

Work collaboratively with others in Cigna Legal as required.

Hiring Location: Philadelphia, PA or Bloomfield, CT

Qualifications

JD/Bar membership required

Minimum of 6 years relevant in-house or law firm legal experience

Subject matter expertise in the areas of: FMLA, ADA, state leave laws, health and welfare benefit plans, employment law, third party administration and contracting, state and federal regulatory issues, and employer account support relating to insurance regulations, privacy, and ERISA

First-hand experience interacting with regulators is also preferred

Strong work ethic and excellent judgment

Ability to collaborate with Legal Team on issues impacting broader organization

Strong analytical, contract drafting, negotiating, presentation and communication skills
