HSSE legal and regulatory risks in the highly regulated and litigious environment of the US are among the most significant risks facing BP’s operating businesses globally. Successfully managing these risks is critical to maintaining our US businesses’ license to operate. This role will have a significant contribution to the delivery of BP’s strategy and safeguarding BP’s global reputation.
We are looking for an experienced, energetic and highly proactive specialist environmental/health & safety lawyer to provide regulatory support to our US operating businesses. This role will be responsible for providing advice and also managing contested matters, and is expected to regularly interact with business clients from Group Leaders to site level managers. Additionally, this role will involve interacting with Group Leaders in other functions.
This role will provide key advice and counsel to operating and business leaders on issues regarding regulatory compliance as well as negotiating with regulatory agencies, supervising litigation regarding regulatory issues and providing proactive advice to our operating businesses on emerging risks. Additionally, this role will be tasked with managing emerging risks to the US businesses from the activities of state and local regulators and non-governmental organizations.
Provide critical HSSE legal advice and support to the assigned US operating businesses, and/or in assigned specialist areas, with respect to environmental, health, safety and security laws and regulations. Assigned businesses may be modified consistent with team and business needs, but will include a cross-section of BP's US-based businesses.
Work closely with those businesses to remain in compliance and to analyse potential changes in operations and /or regulations that may pose a compliance risk to the businesses, and to contribute to the successful delivery of their safety agenda.
Support those businesses in the event of incidents or events that implicate environmental, health, safety or security laws or regulations, including accidents and releases.
Support the trading organization in its activities that may involve HSSE matters.
Support those businesses in the area of emerging legal risk, which will include assessing developments on the state and local level as well as with nongovernmental organizations. This will involve working closely with senior level and group leaders in BP’s functions as well as its operating businesses.
Provide support to the central functions, including S&OR and Group Audit, in their work that impacts the US operating businesses.
In all of the above, work collaboratively with colleagues in the HSSE and other legal teams, in particular the business-facing, disputes and US C&EA lawyers.
JD, admission and good standing in a state bar.
Essential experience and job requirements
The candidate should have a minimum of ten years of HSSE practice experience in a law firm, a corporation or both. Preferably the work experience will include significant exposure to the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, RCRA and OSHA PSM. Additionally, the candidate should have demonstrated the ability to act in a ‘first chair’ capacity with respect to significant risks in the HSSE arena, including with regard to litigated matters.
The candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as good judgment in interpersonal interactions.
The candidate should be able to demonstrate a track record of taking a proactive, energetic and collaborative approach to provision of legal support and advice.

Desirable criteria & qualifications
Experience in the petroleum or chemicals industry is desirable.
Managing or litigating complex regulatory matters would be viewed as a positive.
Experience with complex consent decrees is a plus.
