Our Opportunity:

Chewy is looking for a Senior Corporate Counsel, Privacy to join our Legal Team based in Plantation, Florida. This position is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to join a fast-paced, technology-first dynamic department supporting all aspects of the organization with respect to a broad spectrum of data governance and privacy issues. As the Senior Corporate Counsel of Privacy, you will work cross-functionally with our business partners in Information Technology, Marketing, Healthcare, and Human Resources.  This position is critical to ensure that Chewy’s products, platforms and data-driven initiatives are designed and operated in compliance with applicable privacy and data protection laws while enabling innovation and growth.  This role requires a proactive, solutions-oriented attorney who effectively navigates ambiguity and exercises sound judgment to enable informed, strategic decision-making.

What You'll Do:

  • Monitor legislation and advise on new developments in global privacy and data protection laws and regulations, including U.S. state privacy laws (e.g., CCPA/CPRA), PIPEDA, and other frameworks.

  • Provide practical, business-focused guidance on the collection, use, sharing, retention, and protection of personal data across Chewy’s products and operations. 

  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of privacy policies, notices, and internal governance standards. 

  • Partner closely with engineering, data, and technology teams to embed privacy considerations into the design, development, and deployment of products and platforms (“privacy by design”). 

  • Review and advise on privacy implications of new products, features, technologies, and data uses, including conducting and supporting privacy impact assessments.

  • Counsel on data-driven initiatives, including analytics, personalization, marketing technologies, and emerging technologies, from a privacy and data governance perspective. 

  • Support responses to regulatory inquiries and customer data subject requests.

  • Contribute to ongoing maturation of Chewy’s privacy program through process improvements, training, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Develop contract structures that address privacy and data protection requirements and lead the review of applicable privacy and data protection language in agreements with affiliates and vendors.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and partner to colleagues at all levels of the organization

 What You’ll Need:

  • JD from an accredited school with exceptional academic credentials

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in a top law firm or in-house counsel position; experience supporting e-commerce and/or retail from a privacy/data governance perspective is a plus

  • Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in privacy and data protection law in multi-jurisdictional settings  

  • Experience using various privacy and data governance software tools and platforms, such as OneTrust, Ketch and BigID

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and assess and communicate legal, financial, and reputational risks while identifying practical, business-aligned paths forward

  • Significant experience providing direct and timely advice  to business clients at various levels of the organization.

  • Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, manage competing priorities, and navigate ambiguity

  • Excellent organization and analytical skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple matters across diverse stakeholders and products

  • Active license to practice law in at least one state and ability to become licensed as in-house counsel in Florida

  • High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and professional judgment, with empathy and a good sense of humor.

  • IAPP CIPP certification(s) is a plus

  • Position may require occasional travel.
