In this role, you will have an opportunity to interface not only with our clients but also with the Arizona State Judicial System daily. You are responsible for the timely and accurate assignment of legal counsel or guardian ad litem to indigent clients for a variety of courts throughout the County as well as clerical duties related to the assignments.
About Us
The Maricopa County Office of Public Defense Services assigns and oversees private attorneys contracted to represent indigent individuals in criminal, delinquency, dependency, mental health, and probate matters. We provide administrative support, financial oversight, integrated technology solutions, and HR support to all five of Maricopa County’s Indigent Representation offices (Public Defender, Legal Defender, Legal Advocate, Public Advocate and Contract Counsel) in an effort to ensure indigent individuals have their fundamental legal rights protected and receive quality legal representation.

We Require
Three years of progressively responsible full-time legal, court, or justice system administrative experience
High school diploma or GED
A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
Experience using Integrated Compliance Court Information System (ICIS)
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Job Contributions
Receives requests and makes attorney assignments in accordance with contractual guidelines
Researches miscellaneous case information using the department case management system (CACE) and ICIS
Creates assignments and enters payment information in CACE
Notifies Maricopa County courts of the assignments appropriately and promptly
Reviews court minute entries to reconcile assignment and payment requests
Maintains attorney assignment statistics
Answers questions regarding the Office of Public Defense Services (OPDS) and court procedures from contract attorneys, vendors, courts and indigent clients
Attends meetings and training regarding changes of court protocol
Provides coverage for other assignment desks as assigned
Serves as receptionist by answering phone inquiries, sorting and distributing mail, greeting visitors, and maintaining vendor correspondence as requested
Working Conditions
Indoor office setting, often high volume, extended periods sitting at a computer inputting or reviewing data
Unscheduled and frequently changing tasks, decision-making, concentration/vigilance, and public contact are frequent occurrences
Upon successful completion of initial training, this position has the option to choose among several hybrid schedule options, including the potential to work up to 5 days from home each pay period
