Legal Counsel

About the Job

We are seeking a dynamic Legal Counsel for our global in-house team. This is a generalist role with a global remit. The candidate brings litigation management capability but is equally comfortable drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, managing outside counsel spend, navigating multi-jurisdictional compliance, advising on intellectual property matters, and handling the full range of legal work at a fast-moving consumer products company. No two days will look the same.

The ideal candidate is a "technology early adopter" genuinely excited about using AI to do more with less as a core working method, helping drive the team toward an AI-enabled model of legal service delivery that produces high-quality work faster, in-house, at a fraction of traditional outside counsel cost.

Reporting

This role reports directly to the General Counsel. The candidate can work remotely from any time zone within the U.S., but the role supports operations worldwide and requires comfort working across multiple jurisdictions and time zones.

Candidate Profile

  • Eclectic generalist, comfortable across dispute management, contract and license review, regulatory inquiries, IP, employment law guidance, compliance, and strategic matters.
  • Commitment to mastering AI and emerging technologies and applying them daily to legal service delivery, together with a willingness to share that knowledge across the department and identify new applications that improve team productivity.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with a "we win together" attitude, a genuine service orientation, and a track record of picking up the slack to help others on the team succeed.
  • Proficiency with practical business tools (Word, PDF platforms, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Jira, Confluence, Ironclad, and similar platforms) sufficient to prepare work product without reliance on support staff.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational discipline, and a demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage competing demands across a high-volume, fast-paced workload.

Roles and Responsibilities

General & Commercial

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, vendor and distributor contracts, manufacturing and supply terms, leases, licensing, and employment documents.
  • Advise internal business clients on contractual obligations, risk, and compliance in a practical, accessible, solution-oriented manner.
  • Support strategic initiatives including global expansion, acquisitions, joint ventures, and new market entry.
  • Handle general corporate matters including data privacy and AI Act compliance, entity formation, subsidiary maintenance, and ad hoc interpretive questions.

Intellectual Property

  • Assist with global trademark prosecution and maintenance.
  • Manage trademark and patent defense matters, including enforcement, oppositions, and cancellation proceedings.
  • Negotiate and manage IP licensing agreements, both inbound and outbound.
  • Advise on IP risk in product development, commercial partnerships, and M&A contexts.
  • Review of packaging and marketing assets.

Litigation & Dispute Resolution

  • Manage disputes (including litigation, arbitration, mediation, and pre-filing) independently, including direct oversight of outside counsel, case strategy, budgeting, and settlement evaluation.
  • Draft, review, and respond to demand letters, preservation notices, and pre-litigation correspondence, without defaulting to outside counsel.
  • Coordinate discovery efforts, including document collection and review, and manage litigation hold obligations.
  • Coordinate with insurance carriers and brokers on claims, tenders, and subrogation matters.

Outside Counsel & Cost Management

  • Strategically manage outside counsel for cost efficiency by directing strategy, challenging billing, and bringing work in-house wherever feasible.
  • Hold law firms accountable to budget, staffing, and billing guidelines; dispute non-compliant or unreasonable invoices.

AI & Innovation

  • Embrace AI transformation, from evaluating and piloting new tools to scaling those that increase throughput and quality.
  • Use AI to handle matters cross-jurisdictionally that would otherwise require local outside counsel.
  • Apply AI-driven solutions to develop compliance support and training programs, and serve as a resource for colleagues learning to apply AI in their own practice areas.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school, with 3–5 years of legal experience and demonstrated generalist capability.
  • Active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. State bar.
  • Litigation or dispute management experience (in-house, law firm, or both).
  • IP experience, particularly trademark prosecution and defense, patent defense, and IP licensing.
  • Active experience applying AI tools to legal work.
  • Base salary for this role is $130,000 per year.
  • Position includes health benefits, retirement benefits and paid time off.
