About the Opportunity

Kilroy Realty is seeking a Vice President, Real Estate Counsel to play a key leadership role within its legal team, supporting the Company’s real estate platform across acquisitions, leasing, operations, and strategic transactions. This attorney position will be based in Los Angeles, CA and will be a key member of the Company's in-house legal team working on general real estate matters with an emphasis on operations, leasing, and acquisitions/dispositions. This position will directly report to Executive Vice President, General Counsel, oversee the real estate legal function, and will work closely with the entire in-house legal team. The ideal candidate will have law firm and/or in-house experience working on real estate transactions and be willing to work on a wide variety of legal matters at the Company. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, providing practical, business-oriented legal guidance across the full lifecycle of real estate assets.

Opportunity Requirements

  • J.D. from a top-tier law school and current member in good standing of the California state bar.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working on transactional real estate matters at a leading law firm or as part of an in-house legal team at a real estate focused company.
  • Experience representing institutional landlords, real estate investment trusts, and/or property management companies, particularly with respect to office assets, is preferred.
  • Strong intellect, critical thinking and pragmatic business acumen with the ability to make well-reasoned and practical decisions in complex and fast-moving situations.
  • High level of professionalism and judgment with the ability to recognize the business impacts of legal advice.
  • Excellent writing, contract drafting and negotiation skills, specifically with respect to real estate related contracts and agreements.
  • Superior attention to detail and organization with the ability to manage and prioritize several competing matters while still delivering excellent and timely results.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills with a strong desire to advise and help others.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to effectively manage one or more junior attorneys and/or paralegals.
  • Team player with a desire to work in an in-person, collaborative environment with other attorneys, paralegals and non-attorney colleagues, build strong relationships and contribute positively to company culture.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office suite, as well as the ability to learn and become proficient in other work-based technologies adopted by the Company from time to time.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Real Estate Transactions – Support the structuring, negotiation and execution of acquisitions and dispositions, joint ventures, and financing transactions, including negotiation of operative transaction documents, due diligence coordination, title and survey review, and execution of closing matters and deliverables.
  • Leasing - Serve as primary legal advisor to the Leasing team; provide guidance on lease interpretation, tenant issues, and risk mitigation strategies; and draft and negotiate leases and related documents.
  • Property Operations & Construction – Oversee the provision of legal counsel on property management, construction, and operational matters; draft and negotiate vendor and service agreements; advise on insurance, regulatory compliance, environmental matters, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Litigation & Dispute Resolution - Assist in managing real estate-related disputes, including landlord-tenant matters, lease enforcement, collections, and tenant bankruptcies; coordinate with outside counsel on strategy and resolution.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership - Collaborate closely with Investments, Asset Management, Leasing, Construction, Accounting, Tax, and Finance teams; provide legal support on business initiatives and ensure alignment across functions.
  • Team Leadership - Manage and mentor members of the real estate legal team; oversee work allocation, professional development, and performance; ensure consistent, high-quality legal support.
  • Outside Counsel Management – Coordinate with executive team on selection, engagement, and performance of external law firms; manage relationships and ensure cost-effective, high-quality legal services aligned with company objectives.

What we offer
At Kilroy, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within the role. The base pay range for this role is between $280,000 and $345,000 and your base pay will depend on your skills, experience and training, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. This role is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus as well.
