$75,000.00 annually

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

In this role you will:

  • Represent the City and its employees in litigation, primarily defending lawsuits, performing legal research and represent the City in other contract matters.
  • Handle other tasks as assigned by Corporation Counsel including drafting contracts, ordinances prosecuting code violations and handling other legal matters.
  • Meet with City officials, employees, witnesses, doctors, expert witnesses, etc. in preparation of discovery/trials.
  • Ensure file and records are maintained in an organized and efficient manner so that they are readily
  • Perform periodic training to City Council Members in pertinent areas of law, i.e. Open Meetings Act, FOIA, etc.
  • Perform research and advise City departments on a variety of legal issues including workplace discrimination, due process issues and federal/state legal compliance through use of various libraries as well as use of on-line media.


Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will hold a Juris Doctorate degree and possess a valid license to practice law in the State of Illinois. They will demonstrate strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities, along with sound professional judgment and a commitment to ethical public service. The ideal candidate will be able to interpret and apply statutes, regulations, and case law; prepare clear and persuasive legal documents; and provide well-reasoned legal advice to agency staff and leadership. Strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple assignments, and a collaborative working style are essential. Experience in government, administrative law, litigation, or regulatory compliance is highly desirable.

Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
