Regional Managing Attorney (Workers Compensation Staff Counsel)
Our Staff Counsel team is currently seeking a Regional Managing Attorney Staff Counsel to oversee our California workers’ compensation law practice. This position is based in the Glendale, California law office and is hybrid.
Position Overview:
Leads the West Coast Workers’ Compensation law practice within the Staff Counsel organization, serving as the primary liaison to Claims and line-of-business leadership. This role is responsible for driving execution of California-specific workers’ compensation strategies, ensuring high-quality, cost-effective legal representation, and leading a team of attorneys and support staff (approximately 10–15 employees). The role also provides cross-functional leadership support across regions and lines of business as needed.
In this role you will:
- Lead and manage a team of attorneys and staff, including performance management, coaching, and talent development.
- Partner closely with Claims leadership to align legal strategies with business objectives and deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes.
- Execute and operationalize line-of-business initiatives within the Workers’ Compensation practice.
- Monitor and drive performance across assigned teams, offices, and regions using defined metrics and data insights.
- Conduct litigation reviews and audits to ensure adherence to best practices and identify improvement opportunities.
- Provide subject matter expertise in California workers’ compensation law, including mentoring attorneys and advising on complex matters.
- Communicate business goals clearly and ensure alignment across attorneys, managers, and Claims partners.
- Step in to support other managerial roles or lines of business as needed to ensure operational continuity.
- Identify legal and industry trends and proactively adjust strategies to mitigate risk and improve outcomes.
What you need to apply:
- Active California Bar admission required.
- Significant experience in California workers’ compensation law, including insurance
- defense and trial experience.
- Proven leadership experience managing attorneys and/or legal teams.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with Claims partners and senior business leaders.
- Experience evaluating legal work product, conducting audits, and improving performance.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to use metrics and data to drive decision-making and results.
- Ability to lead change, set clear expectations, and hold teams accountable for performance.
- Ability to be physically present in Glendale, California office for hybrid schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience overseeing multi-office or regional legal operations, including remote and/or hybrid employees.
- Strong understanding of insurance industry practices and claims operations.
- Demonstrated success in talent recruitment, development, and retention.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products, Legal Files, Adobe Acrobat, court systems, and legal/claims systems.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to travel as needed, such as to court, mediation, arbitration, trial, depositions, site visits/inspections, and company meetings.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Flexibility to support extended hours when necessary.
