VP & Deputy General Counsel

Compensation: $320,000 to $433,000 Annually

Provide legal support for Association and member companies in proceedings before government agencies and courts. Advise and assist SVP in formulating and implementing Department and Association policies and programs; provide supervision and direction for more junior attorneys; assist General Counsel in implementing General Counsel responsibilities for the Association.


Essential Functions

  • Advises and assists the Senior Vice President (SVP) in formulating and implementing departmental and organizational policies and programs.
  • Serves as Association lead on cable television policy issues.
  • Provides supervision, guidance, and direction to junior attorneys within the department.
  • Supports the General Counsel in executing their responsibilities for the organization.
  • Drafts comments for filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Copyright Office, and other      regulatory agencies.
  • Prepares briefs for court cases and issue briefs for legislative advocacy efforts.
  • Advocates for the cable industry's positions before the FCC and other governmental bodies.
  • Supervises and manages outside counsel and external experts engaged by the organization.
  • Coordinates policy positions with member companies, their legal counsel, and industry coalitions.
  • Advises members and the organization on legal (including in-house legal matters) and policy-related matters.
  • Provides guidance to members on day-to-day operational and compliance questions.
  • Represents the Legal Department at meetings, conferences, and industry events alongside the SVP.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Hold undergraduate and a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution. Licensed to practice law in relevant jurisdictions (DC, MD, VA).
  • Significant FCC and/or relevant private practice experience.
  • Knowledge of cable television  industry and video policy issues is preferred.
  • Political acumen and knowledge of the inner workings of policymaking and governmental bodies.
  • Experience serving as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and senior business leaders, with a proven ability to guide them through sophisticated legal, business, and regulatory matters.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Clear communicator and engaging public speaker with excellent legal and general writing skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; capable of building and cultivating strong relationships with internal clients and external parties.
  • Team player with the ability to work well cross-functionally and in a team environment. 
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to assess complex problems and propose solutions.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented; willing to roll up sleeves and execute.
