This is not a remote location position. You will be required to work in person five days a week. Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements.
Preferred qualifications: Applicants should have excellent writing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills; exhibit good judgment. Trial work and judicial clerkship experience is desirable.

The Civil Division is seeking entry-level attorneys to serve in positions throughout the organization. Selected candidates may be placed in any branch, office, or section based on mission needs.
Attorneys represent the interests of the United States in a broad range of civil matters while supporting the Division's mission to defend federal programs and policies, protect government interests, and serve the public.
Well-qualified candidates may be eligible for a signing bonus of up to $15,000.

As a Trial Attorney, the incumbent:
- Conducts legal research and analysis concerning the interpretation and application of statutes, regulations, and other legal authorities;
- Drafts legal memoranda, briefs, motions, pleadings, and other legal documents;
- Assists with the development, preparation, and handling of litigation matters;
- Participates in hearings, conferences, negotiations, and other litigation-related activities;
- Works closely with client agencies, Department leadership, attorneys, and other stakeholders on litigation and policy-related matters;
- Reviews and analyzes factual records, evidence, and legal issues to support case strategy and recommendations; and
- Performs other duties in support of the Civil Division's mission.

- To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, applicants must have up to one (1) year of legal experience.
- To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, applicants must have minimum (1) or more years post-J.D. legal experience.
- Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
