Responsibilities
The Associate Director, Employment Law Counsel is responsible for providing legal counsel and strategic guidance on a wide range of employment-related matters, including litigation, regulatory/wage and hour compliance, and employee relations. Reporting to the Senior Director, Associate Counsel, this role partners closely with business leaders to mitigate risk, ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws, and support a fair and consistent workplace. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in employment litigation and counseling, with the ability to navigate complex, multi-state legal environments.
- Manage and oversee employment-related litigation matters, including claims involving EEOC, state human rights commissions, wage and hour, and other employment practices
- Partner with internal stakeholders to provide legal guidance on employee relations matters, accommodation requests, investigations, discipline, and terminations
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions
- Lead and coordinate responses to agency charges and audits, including EEOC and state agencies
- Manage relationships with and direct external counsel to ensure effective and efficient case handling
- Conduct legal research and provide proactive advice on emerging employment law trends and risks
- Support alternative dispute resolution efforts
- Review, draft, and update employment policies, practices, and documentation to ensure compliance and consistency
- Provide training and guidance to HR, leadership, and associates on employment law best practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree; Juris Doctor; Member of the New Jersey Bar
- Five to seven years of experience practicing employment law, with a focus on litigation and counseling
- Demonstrated experience handling EEOC matters, state human rights commissions, arbitrations, and wage and hour laws
- Experience working in a multi-state environment with strong knowledge of varying state employment laws
- Proven ability to manage external counsel and balance multiple matters simultaneously
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, writing and communication skills with a business-oriented mindset
- Retail experience, preferred
The pay range reflects the potential base salary range for this role. Individual base pay is determined by various factors such as relevant experience and skills, and the scope and responsibilities of the position.
Pay Range
