NATURE OF WORK: Under limited supervision, supervises professional legal services of unusual difficulty; performs other legal services as required or assigned.As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only) Supervises and reviews work of staff Attorneys and Paralegals; performs organization and administrative duties, to include but not limited to, staff and caseload scheduling; participates in day to day personnel management, to include recruitment, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions as needed; assists in budgetary processes and fiscal review; initiates, engages, and defends litigation; performs legal research; reviews and prepares legal documents; handles appeals; renders legal advice to clients; performs factual investigations. Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited law school. Experience in analyzing complex legal issues and providing legal advice and/or litigating criminal or civil cases. Must be licensed by the State Bar of Arizona to practice law in the State of Arizona, remain active with all Arizona Bar annual requirements, and maintain a clear criminal record. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Extensive trial/litigation experience in a leading role in complex criminal or civil cases. Experience in managing or supervising attorneys and support staff. Preference may be given to individuals with governmental experience. Thorough knowledge of:

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed under limited supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office or court setting with appropriate climate controls.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Essential functions of this position require: lifting up to 20 pounds, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds requires a good deal of walking, standing or involves sitting most of the time.
Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important.

- determining alternative courses of action.
- analyzing, appraising, and organizing facts, evidence and precedents;
- rendering logical, clear and effective written reports and oral arguments;
- presenting and arguing cases in court and handle unanticipated problems smoothly.
Ability to:
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public;
- read, write and speak English;
- follow written and verbal instruction;
- communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
