JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY

This per diem staff attorney position is designed for an attorney beginning practice in a supervised in-house legal environment. The position provides legal support to the General Counsel, the organization and its affiliates on professional, business, regulatory and litigation-related matters. Associate Corporate Counsel works under the direction and supervision of the General Counsel or other designated senior attorney and assists with legal research, drafting, matter support and coordination of assigned legal work.

Associate Corporate Counsel assists with legal research and analysis in all areas of health care law. This position may assist with healthcare transactions, corporate services support, clinical service line support, real estate, foundation/philanthropy, litigation and other areas as assigned. Litigation responsibilities are performed under supervision and may include assisting with threatened and pending litigation, coordinating with in-house and outside counsel as directed, supporting discovery, subpoenas and document preservation, reviewing pleadings and correspondence, preparing draft matter summaries and risk assessments, tracking deadlines and litigation budgets, supporting settlement evaluation and helping ensure organizational compliance with litigation holds and related legal obligations.

This position supports organizational goals by providing responsive, high-quality legal support on an as-needed basis, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to learning, teamwork and cooperation. Associate Corporate Counsel operates under the practices and policies of the organization, follows direction from supervising counsel and helps ensure the organization’s ethical standards are applied in assigned legal matters.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Licensed member of the Bar of the State of New Jersey, or eligible for admission to the New Jersey Bar within one year of date of hire or transfer.

EXPERIENCE: 0-3 years' experience. Prior post-graduate attorney experience is not required. Internship, clerkship, externship, clinical, moot court, law review, law firm, healthcare, compliance, litigation support or related academic or practical legal experience is preferred. Familiarity with health care law, litigation processes, regulatory compliance and transactions is preferred but not required. Demonstrated interest in developing knowledge of State and Federal health care laws/regulations is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, hazardous substances, and potential injury. This position requires sitting a majority of the day, with frequent standing and walking.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the General Counsel or other designated supervising attorney.
