SENIOR STAFF ATTORNEY

As Nevada’s largest and most active organization devoted to the protection and advancement of civil rights and civil liberties, the ACLU of Nevada is one of the state’s most effective public interest nonprofits. The organization works on a broad range of issues, including but not limited to free speech, voting rights, immigrant’s rights, the rights of the unsheltered, criminal justice reform, and LGBTQIA+ rights. DEFINITION

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLU of Nevada) seeks applicants for a Senior Staff Attorney position. As a member of ACLU of Nevada’s legal team, attorneys engage in strategic impact litigation to promote civil liberties and rights in the state of Nevada. This is an in-person, exempt, full-time position.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary is based on experience and qualifications. All senior staff attorneys must have a minimum of five years of legal experience. The salary range for this position is from $82,500.00 - $95,000 depending on experience. Benefits include employer paid health, vision, and dental insurance alongside retirement benefits. Bar dues, liability insurance, and CLE expenses are provided by the ACLU of Nevada.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Proactively developing and engaging in litigation advancing civil liberties and civil rights in Nevada;
  • Representing the ACLU of Nevada and its clients in all aspects of a legal representation, from pre-litigation advocacy through trial and appeal;
  • Conducting training sessions and workshops related to civil liberties for the general public;
  • Working with various state, municipal, and school boards and their attorneys to resolve constitutional violations informally, when appropriate;
  • Engaging in public speaking and news media interviews to articulate the ACLU of Nevada’s views on a broad range of issues, in consultation with and by approval of the Legal Director and Executive Director; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Legal and Executive Directors.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Juris Doctor with current admission to the Nevada bar;
  • At least five years of legal experience;
  • A preference for litigation experience related to civil liberties;
  • Excellent research, writing, oral advocacy, and analytical skills;
  • Experience working in collaborative, diverse, team-based environments;
  • Deep and demonstrated commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and the principles traditionally valued by the ACLU
