This position is responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases.

Major Duties

• Reviews misdemeanor and felony cases; determines whether evidence supports the filing of criminal charges; confers with law enforcement agencies to review search warrants and affidavits; reviews offense reports and witness statements; and prepares charging instruments.
• Prepares criminal cases for trial by locating and interviewing witnesses and victims, gathering and reviewing evidence, visiting crime scenes, planning jury trials, reviewing applicable case law, creating visual aids, and interviewing law enforcement officers.
• Represents the State in criminal trials by selecting juries, making opening statements, questioning witnesses, introducing evidence, presenting arguments before judges and juries, and delivering closing arguments.
• Reviews criminal cases for appropriate disposition; presents cases to the Grand Jury; prepares indictments; recommends bonds.
• Represents the State in criminal motion hearings.
• Participates in community outreach activities and represents the office to civic organizations.
• Coordinates with community supervision officers regarding appropriate terms and conditions of probation, the progress of probationers, and matters related to probation revocation, modification, or adjudication.
• Participates in external training activities.
• May be designated as a Border Prosecutor or assigned other special assignments.
• Performs any other duties as assigned.

• Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited school of law.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. Minimum of one ( 1 ) year of work experience in the area of law, preferred.
• Current membership in the State Bar of Texas or eligible for a temporary bar card while awaiting bar results.

• The work consists of a variety of duties in the prosecution of criminal cases. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the position's complexity.
• The purpose of this position is to assist in the prosecution of criminal cases. Successful performance in this position contributes to the effective administration of justice and the successful resolution of criminal cases.

• Must possess a valid and current Texas Driver's License or a Texas Identification card.
• The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
• This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
