The Troy City Attorney’s Office serves as the designated legal representative of the City, and effectively communicates and works with other City officials, including City Council, City Management, and the various boards and committees of the City. The attorneys prepare and try civil and criminal cases and pursue appeals in state and federal courts.

 

DUTIES

·         Provide legal services for the City of Troy under the general supervision of the City Attorney.

·         Represent the interests of the City in civil litigation and appeals.

·         Provide legal advice and research for City Council and various boards and committees of the City.

·         Prosecute criminal misdemeanors, municipal civil infraction violations and civil infraction violations.

·         Process criminal warrant requests and prosecute and defend criminal appeals.

·         Review contracts and update selected City Code sections, conduct legal research, prepare and review legal documents. 

·         Perform related work as required.

 

REQUIREMENTS 

·         Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.

·         Current membership in the State Bar of Michigan or be eligible for reciprocity or otherwise eligible to practice law in the State of Michigan.  Applicants must submit proof of State Bar of Michigan membership or reciprocity eligibility at time of application.

·         No criminal convictions.

·         Four or more years of municipal law experience. Applicants must clearly detail the areas of past practice and the percentage of practice devoted to municipal work.  

·         Must possess a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out of state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of appointment.

·         As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).

 

PREFERENCES

·         Proficiency in trial and appellate advocacy, legal writing, and legal research.

·         Prefer substantive experience in constitutional law, land use, governmental immunity and criminal prosecution.
