Head of Legal
What You'll Do
Build and lead the legal function at Concourse as our first legal hire, owning everything from contracts to compliance to corporate matters
Oversee government contracting end to end, drafting, negotiating, and closing agreements with state and local government partners
Stand up templates, playbooks, and self-serve processes so sales and delivery teams can move quickly without waiting on legal for every question
Lead privacy, security, and data protection matters, including how our AI products handle government and resident data
Track the evolving regulatory landscape for AI, especially as it applies to government use, and translate it into practical guidance for product and go-to-market teams
Manage corporate governance, financings, equity, and board matters in partnership with the CEO and outside counsel
Handle employment, IP, and commercial vendor matters as the company scales
Use AI tools to scale your work, automating contract review, research, and repeatable legal workflows
What We're Looking For
Juris Doctor from a top law school with a strong academic record
Several years of practice at a top law firm, ideally in corporate, technology transactions, or government contracts work
Eagerness to work at a startup: you want ownership of an entire function and you'd rather build the machine than operate inside one
Enthusiasm for AI: you're excited to use tools like Claude to 10x your output and to reason about the novel legal questions AI raises
Comfort navigating government or enterprise procurement, or a strong interest in learning the public sector landscape
Strong commercial instincts: you know when to hold a position and when a risk is worth taking, and you communicate tradeoffs in plain language
Structured thinker who can turn ambiguous situations into a clear plan and next steps
High agency: you find the work that needs doing and do it without being asked
Based in or willing to relocate to NYC for in-office work
Why This Role
Build the Legal Function From Scratch – You're the first legal hire, defining how Concourse handles contracts, compliance, and risk from the ground up.
Own Consequential Work – Government deals live and die on contracting and procurement; your work directly determines how fast the company can grow.
Be sure to reference GoInhouse.com in your application.
Ground Floor Opportunity – Join an early-stage startup led by a repeat founder with a successful exit.
About Concourse
Concourse is a fast-growing, AI-native startup building software for the public sector. This is the second venture for our CEO, after a successful exit.
We help governments provide better services to citizens at a lower cost by replacing inefficient legacy systems. We're building everything from Hawaii's online bail platform to a system that flags leaks in residents' homes in Owosso, Michigan.
The nature of technology and work has fundamentally changed. Join a team of superstars in a flat organizational structure, where being AI-native means every team member is empowered by a running fleet of long-horizon agents to own entire projects and client relationships end to end.
Based in Flatiron, NYC.
