Job Description

This position has lead responsibility for legal support to the US Loyalty business within American Express which operates the Plenti loyalty program. This is a broad role for a versatile and adaptable lawyer, covering all areas of legal support for the Plenti program, with a focus on highly sophisticated commercial contracts and regulatory analysis supporting the operational and compliance framework of the business, particularly as it relates to consumer protection. This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented lawyer to make a key contribution to a fast growing business within the American Express group. The successful candidate will sit on the leadership team for the business and play an executive level role in broad strategies for the business.

Job responsibilities:

Provide executive and strategic level counseling and support to the Plenti business team on legal and policy matters, business negotiations, marketing services and programs

Independently support negotiations and discussions with partners, including drafting and reviewing contracts and terms sheets, and following established contract approval processes

Identify issues that may impact the foundational legal analysis and program positioning as well as thoughtfully reconsider and reevaluate past positions

Partner with government affairs to monitor external legal and regulatory developments for potential impact to business

Support governance and risk management practices and advise on applicable legal and regulatory requirements, including US Loyalty internal policies relating to governance and control standards

Support Compliance with matters of legal interpretation and partner with the Compliance and Operational Risk functions to ensure control and compliance goals are achieved

Request, obtain and finalize legal opinions/advice from outside counsel as needed and manage related budgets

Collaborate strategically with all levels of business and legal management

Work to drive consensus, provide thought leadership and exert influence in a cross-functional capacity and make appropriate recommendations to management

Collaborate with the Marketing and Advertising team in establishing an appropriate marketing review process for the business

Oversee the review of creative materials and the creation of marketing templates that can be used broadly in the program

Manage an Associate Counsel/Legal Manager direct report


10+ years of relevant experience; qualified to provide in-house advice to a NY corporation

Strong drafting and negotiation skills as well as experience negotiating complex transactions will be required to ensure that the agreements stand the test of time and form a solid basis for good ongoing business relationships

Ability to interpret and apply law and regulation in a practical, hands-on, common sense manner

Adaptability - able and willing to work proactively, both as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision

Willingness to learn and grow - willing to learn relevant business sectors as well as the applicable regulatory environment

Strong relationship focus - collaborative, excellent inter-personal and teamwork skills, able to build solid working relationships with employees and external parties

Process-management skills - strong knowledge-management skills and ability to help identify and implement improvements in work process to enhance efficiency and productivity

Ability to interface with, influence and advise a dynamic and fast-paced business team at all levels

Ability to resolve novel, complex issues and align across stakeholder groups

Ability to handle multiple tasks, take on new responsibilities and prioritize work in a dynamic, deadline-intensive environment; experience in leading and facilitating change

Excellent issue-spotting and pragmatic problem-solving skills are required

Proven ability to lead and motivate others to high levels of performance

Exceptional written and verbal communications skills; the role requires someone with credibility and executive presence

Self-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitment; serve as a role model for others in the General Counsel's Organization (GCO) and the business; drive to excel; motivation and ability to master diverse sets of skills and a wide range of legal areas and business strategies/operations; strong customer focus

Strategic thinker with good business understanding, analytical skills and a rapid grasp of key issues

High integrity and strong judgment in line with American Express values

JD and New York Bar membership in good standing
