Summary:
Recognized as one of the worlds leading and most innovative medical research organizations, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is recruiting for an experienced attorney with a proven record of client service and a practical, problem-solving approach to providing legal services to join its team as an Associate General Counsel at HHMIs headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
HHMIs Office of the General Counsel (OGC) supports and partners closely with HHMIs programmatic and operational departments. OGC lawyers develop an in-depth understanding of HHMIs mission and operational goals, participate in strategic planning, find innovative solutions to our clients needs, and strive to provide the most efficient, practical, and timely advice possible. What youll do:
Each Associate General Counsel at HHMI handles diverse legal matters arising at a group of HHMI research sites, as well as a portfolio of other matters arising from HHMIs programmatic or operational departments. Work associated with the research sites includes review and negotiation of a wide array of agreements, such as those involving industry and academic collaborations with HHMI scientists, and frequent interaction with both HHMI management and scientists to advise them on relevant legal issues and the interpretation and application of HHMI research policies. The portfolio of other HHMI programmatic or operational matters for which the successful candidate will be responsible may include science education initiatives as well as other areas depending, in part, on OGCs needs as well as the successful candidates past experience and expertise.
What you bring:
J.D. degree with a strong academic background.
Active membership of an established Bar.
At least seven years of experience as an attorney in private practice with a law firm, or in a for-profit, non-profit, or government legal department.
Significant experience in legal practice including drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex legal agreements; drafting and reviewing legal memoranda; analyzing complex legal and factual issues; performing substantive legal research; and regularly interacting with and advising clients.
Experience with life sciences matters and intellectual property issues, including copyright and new media platforms, is a plus.
Excellent interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent judgment; able to handle multiple projects and set priorities.
Able and willing to handle a variety of tasks across a broad range of substantive areas and to learn new areas quickly.
Creativity and positive attitude.

Compensation Range
$198,589.60 (minimum) - $248,237.00 (midpoint) - $322,708.10 (maximum)

HHMIs salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
